From our kitchen to yours

June 1, 2017

We are pleased to announce that our restored 1890s farmhouse is featured in the June issue of the Maine based publication, Down East magazine. Just after the holidays we were contacted by the magazine's senior editor, Virginia Wright who pitched us her idea. Wright fell in love with our period kitchen in 2011 when she came up the coast to interview us about one of our Eastport kitchen renovations for the Down East story, "every Mainer's kitchen." Last summer, while vacationing on Boyden Lake she passed by our home many times. This got her thinking that our story would be perfect for the June issue when the lupines are in full bloom.

Both interior and exterior photographs were provided by our own Joyce Jackson, while Down East enlisted photographer, Michael D. Wilson for additional interior shots, as well as candid portraits of us working in our art studios. Before moving to Maine, Wilson worked in New York City where he was an assistant to photographer, Martin Schoeller, best known for his celebrity portraits. Schoeller himself had been an assistant to famed celebrity photographer, Annie Leibovitz.

The June issue of Down East magazine is on newsstands now.

This spring our restoration efforts were once again recognized when the preservation, organization Greater Portland Landmarks included fineartistmade in their juried, Northern New England Preservation Directory. The directory is a resource for homeowners in need of advice about restoring, renovating, maintaining, or building on to their historic properties. The listing highlights our specialties, period kitchens and baths; as well as antique window and door restoration.

Check out our blog, Square Nails and Tells, that walks you through our latest and most serious restoration to date in the circa 1850 Benjamin R. Jones home in Dennysville. We put back many original elements and added a few of our own; creating spaces that evoke the evolution of a kitchen from the mid-19th century to the beginning of the modern era.
